Nepal promulgated new constitution

But with the installation of new constitution on Sunday, Nepal will formally institutionalise these four key highlights.

President Ram Baran Yadav signed the Constitution and made the proclamation announcement which was greeted with applause by members of the Constituent Assembly in Kathmandu.

This is the seventh constitution to be promulgated in Nepal in the last 67 years, the promulgation of the constitution signified Nepal’s transition from a Hindu Monarchy to a democratic secular republic.

Opposition parties representing the Madhesi and Tharu ethnic groups have expressed concerns about the constitution, arguing it denies equal representation to their peoples.

The federal structure, which will divide the country into seven provinces, has triggered violence, claiming at least 40 lives, including one reported on Sunday.

New Delhi offered its “best wishes to the people of Nepal” on Sunday, but stopped short of congratulations on the new constitution.

“They may disagree with the size and makeup of these states, but that is not a really big issue”, Prime Minister Sushil Koirala said Saturday. The Maoists laid down their arms in 2006 and joined democratic politics with an India-brokered peace deal that paved the way for the constitution.
