Nest finally has a new product … but don’t get too excited

Nest Labs is taking preorders on a weatherproof outdoor version of its Nest Cam home security camera that will reach store shelves in September.

The Nest Cam is water and butterfly proof.

It might not be the most groundbreaking new product, but an outdoor security camera has been highly requested by customers, according to Nest.

“We had a lot of Nest Cam Indoor users putting their cameras in windows and pointing them outside, but that…”

Nest Cam Outdoor combines easy installation with true 24/7 security inside and out.

The cable clip and permanently attached cable will make it hard for a thief to steal the Nest Cam Outdoor.

There are two issues here. You can pre-order it now for $199 with shipping expected to hit in the fall.

The plug-in strategy means if the power goes out, the camera is immediately useless.

The result is a multi-part system.

The most notable enhancement over the original, indoor-only version of Nest Cam is necessary weatherproofing for outdoor use.

The camera features a 130-degree field of view, captures 1920 x 1080 resolution video and features eight IR LEDs for night vision. The power brick – which is actually a small, circular puck – is IP67 weatherproof, meaning it can survive being buried in snow or even submerged in water. You get everything you need in the box, including screws and cable grips. Even the plug has been given special consideration: it’s angled down, so the the hinged cover most outdoor outlets use can still fold down. “This is one of the first cameras to come with two-way audio”, said Nariyawala. The reason for this is simple, say Nest, in that it means that the Nest Cam Outdoor can record all the time, offer full HD quality and excellent night vision, without compromise.

The updated app also introduces “Spaces”.

Like any good Alphabet company, Nest is using machine learning to enable “Person detection” in the cloud.

Google has made securing your home more tech-friendly than ever with the launch of its smartest security camera yet.

It’s not the only change in Nest v5.6.

As standard you only get access to the camera’s live feed, but if you want to have access to the camera’s previous footage you can pay for a subscription to Nest’s Aware service which allows you to have access to the last 10 or 30 days of recordings (depending on your subscription tier). That might be a neighbor who is monitoring your house while you’re on holiday, perhaps, or a grandparent wanting to see inside the nursery. Person Alerts arrived in recognition that, Nariyawala admits, “motion alerts are dumb”. Nest says the new camera should be able to recognize people within a 15 to 20 foot distance so long as its view isn’t obstructed.

Person alerts will send a message to the Nest Cam app when an algorithm determines that a human being is in front of the camera.
