Netflix dominates Golden Globe field
Netflix dominated the TV category with a total of eight nominations, closely followed by HBO and Starz with seven, while Amazon and FX received five each.

“The Golden Globes are encompassing a lot of what’s going on in film”.
On the television front, no single series stood out from the pack, with six earning three Globes nominations each – “American Crime”, “Fargo”, “Mr. Robot”, “Outlander”, “Transparent”, and “Wolf Hall”.
In the category for best actress in a drama, apart from Blanchett and Mara, Brie Larson was nominated for her portrayal of a mother held captive with her young son in “Room”, and Alicia Vikander earned a nod for her role alongside Eddie Redmayne in “The Danish Girl”, a film about transgender pioneer Lili Elbe.
But this year, the race is wide open with numerous contenders for the coveted best picture award, and not necessarily the most obvious ones, said Tom O’Neil, founder of awards tracker Goldderby.com. The series received mixed to favorable reviews (The Times’ Mary McNamara called it a “grand if inconsistent experiment”) when it debuted in August, with some critics put off by its incessant voiceover and Scorcese-lite style.
Also with four nods is Alejandro Inarritu’s follow-up to his Oscar-winning Birdman: the frontier epic The Revenant, which was nominated for best picture, drama, and best actor for Leonardo DiCaprio.
“When Netflix started not so long ago, it was a company that delivered DVDs via the post office”, Robert Thompson, professor of television and popular culture at Syracuse University, told AFP.
The nominations on the comedy side included perhaps even more surprises. Its original shows Transparent and Mozart in the Jungle won nominations for Best Musical or Comedy Series. Transparent, an Amazon original, and Netflix’s Orange is the New Black were both nominated for best series (musical or comedy) alongside traditional TV offerings, with additional acting nominations for Judith Light (Transparent) and Uzo Abuda (Orange is the New Black).
Acting categories were also ripe with digital talent.
VOD favorites favorites, and past Golden Globe winners, such as Transparent, Orange is the New Black and House of Cards once again claimed high-profile nods from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
It’s also worth noting that Starz performed very well on Thursday.
The Golden Globes TV categories this year had some… unexpected names.

Besides those three, the only star who get a double nomination is Alicia Vikander. In totality, the streaming service giant earned nine Global Globe nominations, among which one was in a film category – the first time for Netflix. The gritty ballet drama was not well-received by critics -McNamara called it “absurd” – but was picked over such fare as HBO’s “Show Me a Hero” and “Bessie”.
