Netflix dominates Golden Globe nods for streaming services, but others gaining ground

Blanchett and Mara will be up against Brie Larson for “Room”, Saoirse Ronan for Irish immigrant tale “Brooklyn” and Alicia Vikander for movie “The Danish Girl” in the best actress race.

Monaghan actress Caitriona Balfe also garnered a nomination for Best Actress in a Television Series (Drama) for her role in “Outlander”, as did Eva Green for “Penny Dreadful“, which is filmed in Ireland. Aaron Sorkin also received a nod for Best Screenplay – Motion Picture, and both films were nominated for Best Score.

Golden Globe winners will be announced at a televised ceremony in Los Angeles on January 10, hosted by comedian Ricky Gervais.

This season, both The Golden Globes and The SAG Awards showed just how crowded the television production company space is.

Matt Damon for “The Martian”, Steve Carell for “The Big Short”, Al Pacino for “Danny Collins”, Mark Ruffalo for “Infinitely Polar Bear” and Christian Bale for “The Big Short”.

The Screen Actors Guild announced its nominations on Wednesday.

The true outlier in the drama series category is “Narcos”, Netflix’s drama series about the rise of Pablo Escobar and the Medellín Cartel.

Of late, Netflix has been boosting its original content to answer critics, which has helped it pocket the coveted nominations. Fonda, who was nominated for supporting actress for “Youth”, won her first Golden Globe as most promising newcomer female for her debut in 1950’s “Tall Story”.

“The Martian”, a box-office hit and a possible Oscar favorite, stands a better chance of winning best picture at the Globes as a comedy than as a drama, where the field includes Tom McCarthy’s acclaimed Boston Globe drama “Spotlight”, Todd Haynes” “50s romance “Carol” and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s frontier epic “The Revenant”. Similarly, I loved Hulu’s dark family comedy Casual, but would I have expected to see it alongside Silicon Valley and Veep on HBO, Transparent and Mozart In The Jungle (!!) on Amazon, and Orange Is The New Black on Netflix in the comedy series category? The film did not receive a best picture nod, however, which may come as a disappointment to the SVOD, which has strategically chosen to distribute the film in theaters to make it eligible for awards such as the Golden Globes and the Oscars.

Other digital broadcasters also did well, with Amazon earning five nominations and Hulu nabbing its first.

Thankfully, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association nominated Lily Tomlin, age 76, for best actress, musical or comedy, for her ferociously amusing and poignant turn in “Grandma”, released earlier this year. Globes voters seemed to go out of their way to recognize new entrants and lower-profile shows at a time when the biz is abuzz with the daunting volume of original series. ABC fared the best of the lot, picking up four nominations in total, with most of those going to its high-minded anthology series “American Crime”.
