Lenny Abrahamson’s Room continues to pick up great notices on its United States release and has now notched up an impressive three Golden Globe nominations for the awards in 2016. Netflix’s Narcos was also nominated for best television series in the drama category.

Johnny Depp may be in the Screen Actors Guild mix for Best Actor, but his performance in Black Mass has been overlooked at the Golden Globes. “It took just three nominations, down from nine previous year”. The Globes’ lead actor group features Bryan Cranston for “Trumbo“, Leonardo DiCaprio for “The Revenant“, Michael Fassbender for “Steve Jobs”, Eddie Redmayne for “The Danish Girl” and Will Smith for “Concussion“.
Actors Angela Bassett, America Ferrera, Chloe Grace Moretz and Dennis Quaid will announce the nominations for honors for tops television and film awards bestowed by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
Acting categories were also ripe with digital talent.
A Globes nomination can give a show, film or actor not only a bump in audience, but an edge in Hollywood’s crowded awards season.
The movie sees Hardy team up with filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu for the first time and reunite with DiCaprio – they worked together on Inception.
The TV network is also absent in the running for best comedy series.
The list for the best actress in a drama race was a bit different than that for the SAG Awards.
Brooklyn has been one of the most acclaimed movies of 2015 after premiering at the Sundance Film Festival at the beginning of the year. The movies that are contenders for the best drama prize are “Carol“, “Spotlight“, “Room“, “The Revenant“, and “Mad Max: Fury Road“. However, because the HFPA nominates movies in two categories, not all these movies will get a nod for Best Picture.
“Carol“, the story of a married older woman who falls in love with a young shopgirl in the 1950s, garnered five nominations including best drama film, director, score and acting nods for Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara.
Suffragette was another movie that was tipped to be an awards contender earlier this year but it hasn’t worked out so far. Rachel McAdams was nominated for a SAG Award for “Spotlight” but is missing for the Globes.
Financial crisis film “The Big Short“, revenge thriller “The Revenant” and biopic “Steve Jobs” followed close behind with four nominations each for the Globes, which will be handed out in Beverly Hills on January 10.
Other movies that were overlooked include Straight Outta Compton, Beasts of No Nation, and Sicario. But the chances of “Max” appearing as a Best Picture nominee have certainly increased with the Golden Globes recognition.

Spotlight is a movie that has been met with acclaim and is being tipped to be a major Oscar player when the nominations are announced next year.
