Netflix leads SAG Award Nominations with 10

Leading the Screen Actors Guild Award nominations with three nods is Trumbo, featuring New Zealand actor Dean O’Gorman as Kirk Douglas in a Hollywood blacklist drama. Spotlight’s only other nomination came for Best Cast.

The Screen Actors Guild announced the nominations for their 2015 annual awards.

Among the women, Cate Blanchett was nominated for the romantic drama “Carol, ‘ Brie Larson for psychological thriller ‘Room, ‘ Saoirse Ronan for Irish immigrant tale ‘Brooklyn” and Sarah Silverman for ‘I Smile Back.

Nominee for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role “Beasts of No Nation”, Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Supporting Role “Beasts of No Nation”, Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries “Luther”: “Wow I’m just floored and humbled right now”.

Eddie will face fierce competition from Bryan Cranston (Trumbo), Johnny Depp (Black Mass), Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant) and Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs). Yet, individual nominations, especially for movies, remained largely white – only adding to concerns this will be yet another monochromatic awards season.

The period drama will compete against Game of Thrones, Homeland, House of Cards and Mad Men for the award.

The winners of the SAG Awards will be announced at a ceremony simulcast on TNT and TBS at 8pm EST on January 30, 2016. The mostly baffling choices (full list here) betrayed an old-fashioned approach to what qualifies as the “best” when it comes to TV’s increasingly wide range of performances-and a dispiriting retreat to the familiar rather than a determination to highlight the new.

On the film side, “Trumbo” leads the nominations with three, while “Beasts of No Nation”, “Carol”, “Room”, “Spotlight”, “Steve Jobs”, “The Big Short” and “The Danish Girl” each garnered two apiece.

She received her SAG nomination in the TV movie/mini-series actress category for Grace of Monaco, the critically-slammed biopic that American producer Harvey Weinstein refused to release in USA cinemas. But it’s hard to see how the Oscars would shut-out Spotlight in the Supporting Actor category like the Screen Actors Guild did.

Matt Damon has been expected to be in the discussion for The Martian, but his campaign took a significant hit when he didn’t earn a SAG Awards nomination.

The prime winners on the SAG awards, chosen by greater than one hundred, 000 actors, typically go on to win Oscars. The show’s star Jon Hamm is also nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series.
