Netflix’s TV nominations came from drug drama “Narcos”, Aziz Ansari’s comedy “Master of None”, thriller “Bloodline”, comedy “Grace and Frankie”, women’s prison comedy “Orange Is The New Black” and Washington political drama “House of Cards”.

Old favorites like “Modern Family” and “Homeland” were shut out, while “Mad Men” and “Downton Abbey” garnered just single acting nods for Jon Hamm and Joanne Froggatt respectively. While it took three top Globe nominations Thursday, including best director for McCarthy and best screenplay, its ensemble cast is failing to stand out from the pack.

“I saw so many people I have admired over the years – both in front of and behind the cameras”, he said Thursday.

The Golden Globe Awards attract Hollywood’s biggest names to a boozy, unpredictable party. Now all the film has to do is improve its box-office performance, which sits at an unimpressive $3.7-million. Director Todd Haynes was nominated in the Best Director – Motion Picture category, and composer Carter Burwell is up for Best Original Score for his work on “Carol”. But it wasn’t enough to beat out some other really stellar performances including Leonardo DiCaprio (who’s going to be almost impossible to beat for his role in “The Revenant”), Eddie Redmayne as the first person to undergo sexual reassignment surgery in “The Danish Girl”, Will Smith in “Concussion” (also doing an accent, though prosthetic-less), Bryan Cranston as a blacklisted screenwriter in “Trumbo” and Michael Fassbender in “Steve Jobs”. The bigger surprise was Amazon grabbing five nominations and Hulu scored a major category victory as well.

The biggest hits on the list are “The Martian”, with three nominations, and “Mad Max: Fury Road”, with two.

Ricky Gervais returns as host for the Globes on January 10. Because the shows are of the same genre, they were both nominated for Best TV series, Comedy.

The TV drama category, meanwhile, only has one network show: Fox’s “Empire”.

Aside from “Carol”, the best drama nominees are “The Revenant”, “Spotlight”, “Room” and “Mad Max: Fury Road”.

The Golden Globe nominees for the best television drama series have been announced in Beverly Hills, California.

Another surprise? The voting body behind the HFPA has a lot of love for the U.S. series “Mr. Robot”, too, handing out nominations for the show and stars Rami Malek and Christian Slater.

The nominees for best motion picture comedy or musical are “The Martian”, “Trainwreck”, “The Big Short”, “Joy” and “Spy”. CW’s “Jane the Virgin” leading lady Gina Rodriguez – last year’s victor – and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” star Rachel Bloom are pitted against each other in the musical or comedy actress category.

That’s how this one works – it’s not a group of entertainment industry peers who vote, it’s a collection of “reporters” hungry not for scoops, but for free shrimp and selfies with movie and TV stars.

Streaming series from Netflix (which led television with eight nods), Amazon and Hulu dominated the TV side of the Globes, which jumped all over the dial. Six shows tied for the most nominations: “Fargo”, “Mr. Robot”, “Outlander”, “Transparent”, “American Crime” and “Wolf Hall”.
