According to Deadline, Netflix has ordered a 10-episode run of the series. Surprisingly, Spike’s wife suggested the idea of turning the movie into a series and the couple ran with the idea, ending in a deal with Netflix. The series is actually a modern-day remake of Spike Lee’s inaugural feature film of the same name, which premiered in 1986.

“She’s Gotta Have It has a very special place in my heart”. Lee will direct all of the episodes, and will co-produce the project with his wife Tonya Lewis Lee. We recently had a great writeup of the film that you can read here. Now with the passing (August 8) of the 30th anniversary, it’s a gift that keeps on giving. The film turned 30 years old last month, Lee said in a statement – marking the ideal time to revisit the beloved characters who he claims are still relevant to audiences all these years later. The original film centers on a Brooklyn artist named Nola Darling as she comes to terms with her complicated identity in relation her Friends, her Job, and her Three Lovers. “It had not occurred to me at all”, he explained. Tonya saw it plain as day. Based on the caliber of Lee’s storytelling abilities, especially with a story that he knows so well, She’s Gotta Have It seems poised to be another success for Netflix. The film starred Tracy Camilla Johns as Nola Darling, It also starred Tommy Redmond Hicks, John Canada Terrell and Lee as her suitors. Lee won two Emmys for When the Levees Broke, his documentary on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans.
