Netflix’s new Windows 10 app embraces Microsoft’s universal dream

Netflix has completely rebuilt their Windows application as a cross-platform or universal app. The new app will become available this week. Moreover, what you’ll now find is a consistent experience across mobile and desktop, as the responsive design means that it automatically optimizes to suit the form factor of the device it’s used on.

Like on other platforms the categories are now browsed vertically and the titles within the categories horizontally. Universal apps are created to be able to run across a range of hardware and screen sizes, allowing the same app to work on a phone, tablet, PC, and TV screen. The Netflix app will also take advantage of features specific to Windows 10, such as voice activation via Microsoft’s Cortana virtual assistant, Microsoft said in its own blog post. With something for everyone, Windows 10 has been a platform with apps and gadgets to satisfy the needs of all types of users.

Netflix’s new Window 10 app is more than just a pretty makeover.

Microsoft notes that in the last week alone, Netflix, Pandora, the Wall Street Journal, and others have launched Universal apps. Microsoft finally rolled out the new Netflix app, now enabling users to take full advantage of the latest Windows OS. To consider this a success, Microsoft expects to include thousands of universal apps.

When a member is browsing content with a mouse, paginated scrolling of the content within a row is enabled by buttons on the ends of the row. The new app offers customizable live tiles that show artwork for shows you can “continue watching”, as well as a new interface much more reminiscent of the web view.

What’s more, during the Black Friday sale, 75 percent of the customers were first-time Windows Store purchasers, according to the company itself, which also adds that, during the recently debuted 10 Cent Deals campaign, paid app purchases increased by 29 times.
