Lets get right into this year’s Golden Globes reactions by breaking down the good, the bad, and the ugly truth about this year’s nominations!
On Thursday morning nominations arrived for the Golden Globes, aka the biggest movie- (and TV)-related awards show that actually doesn’t mean a lot because it’s not the Oscars or the Emmys and every year brings nonsensical categorizations and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is a small, veiled body that no one really knows why we pay attention this way.
USA’s Mr. Robot and its stars Rami Malek and Christian Slater managed to win voters over and score a series of nominations.
Hulu, a joint venture between Comcast’s (CMCSA – Analyst Report) NBCUniversal Television Group, 21 Century Fox’s (FOX – Snapshot Report) Fox Broadcasting Company, Disney’s (DIS – Analyst Report) ABC Television Group, also showed its production chops with the acclaimed comedy series Casual, which received one Golden Globe nomination in Best TV Series, Comedy.
Another willingness to double up: Though this is very unlikely to happen for the Oscars, the HFPA nominated both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara for Best Actress, Drama for “Carol”, even though the studio’s pushing the latter for supporting.
When the Golden Globes nominations arrived, the TV major categories demonstrated just how much the TV landscape has changed. Perhaps the allure of the A-list has lost its luster. Nominees over the past few years have included “Her” and “My Week with Marilyn” films with comedic moments, sure, but certainly not traditional comedies.
It will compete with blockbuster space adventure “The Martian”, Melissa McCarthy caper “Spy”, coming-of-age comedy “Trainwreck” and “Joy”, inspired by the story of the woman who designed the household Miracle Mop.
Swedish actress Alicia Vikander has been on the rise for a couple of years now.
One of the bigger surprises is the prominence of “The Martian” in the comedy/musical categories. But while many were bucking for Ruffalo to get recognized for his passionate performance playing a Boston Globe reporter, it was his endearing, high-wire tour de force as a bipolar father in the flawed but good “Infinitely Polar Bear” that got nominated.
Just like Rocky Balboa, Sylvester Stallone was considered a bit of an underdog in the awards race. “We set out to make a film that would help us better understand our children, but never imagined it would have the impact that it has, and we could not be more thrilled or filled with JOY to receive this nomination from the Hollywood Foreign Press”, says director Pete Docter and producer Jonas Rivera. The film, which she co-wrote, also earned a nomination for best comedy or musical.
