Nevada Police Officer Fatally Shot Has Been Identified As Father of Four
Howell, who left behind a wife and four young children, was fatally shot Saturday when he and other officers responded to a domestic violence call in east Carson City, according to Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Howell responded to the call and as he was talking to a woman, who had visible injuries, a male came out of the house and started shooting at the officer. The suspect in the confrontation died on the scene.
This appears to be the first time a Carson City sheriff’s deputy has been shot and killed on duty since 1867.
The Reno Police Department has taken over the investigation.
“Carl was your poster child of a police officer”. He found a woman with injuries that apparently came from a fight. Deputy Howell then attempted to meet with 30-year-old Jonathan Pope, who was aware deputies had been called. Pope and Howell exchanged gunfire, resulting in both men being struck.
On Saturday evening, hundreds of Carson City residents gathered at the Law Enforcement Officers Memorial on the Capitol grounds to honor Howell.
Three children, between the ages eight to 13, and one adult were subsequently evacuated from the residence in Carson City, Nevada, about 30 miles south of Reno. The mayor also announced that the city has launched an effort to provide financial help for Howell’s family.
“It was chaotic, the police were coming from everywhere”, Scott Harper, one of the witnesses, said to MyNews4.
Authorities said Howell had gone to a home in east Carson City early Saturday after a report of domestic battery. “Our officers, our paramedics, our firemen, our dispatchers – they truly commit everything they have for this town, and this is what the town gives back”.
“It’s a ripple that’s kind of hit all of us very, very hard”, said Michael Sean Giurlani, president of Nevada State Law Enforcement Officers’ Association.

“The heart of our community goes out to the family of the slain officer who was killed in the line of duty earlier this morning”, he said.
