New €20 note with improved security to enter circulation

Crisp new €20 notes with enhanced security features will enter circulation in Ireland and the euro area from Wednesday. Equipment manufacturers and suppliers were invited to a seminar at the Bank of Italy in Rome in February, which was followed a few weeks later by an official unveiling ceremony at the European Central Bank headquarters in Frankfurt.

Take a closer look at the new note here.

A new “portrait window” near the top of the hologram stripe becomes transparent when seen against the light and reveals a portrait of Europa, a figure from Greek mythology.

The 20-euro notes are part of the “Europe” series in which new 5- and 10-euro notes were issued in 2013 and 2014. In total, there were 18.1 billion banknotes in circulation with a face value of €1,053.8 billion.

You’ll get your hands on the new note when you withdraw from the ATM, and the old notes will gradually be phased out as they get worn down.

English- and Irish-language information leaflets on the note are available and there are also braille and audio versions.

The €50 bill is next in line for a makeover, but that won’t be until some time in 2017.
