New AMD hardware suggests next-gen consoles this year and next

Nintendo are long-time AMD customers and the current PS4 and Xbox One also feature AMD internals.

During AMD’s post-financials briefing call yesterday, the company said that it had secured contracts for three new SOC products, which are expected to create revenue for the next three to four years. However, despite the Xbox One’s sales struggles, Microsoft has not given up on its console and its continued sales push now appears to be paying off.

The fact that Microsoft recently stopped manufacturing the Xbox 360 too, suggests it may switch its manufacturing facilities over to something else. Although the actual number of Xbox One consoles sold was not revealed, the company did say that the Xbox One’s reach and engagement are up compared to previous generations. Recent reports indicate Sony is working on the PS4K, or NEO, as a console that would live alongside the current PS4.

That “something different and new” piece of hardware could be the long rumored upgrades to the regular PS4 and Xbox One models, providing for the first time updates to consoles which are not only something aesthetically but related to their power.

She added that not all three designs will be available in 2016. The part of AMD that makes chips for other machines is called the Semi-Custom division. If you didn’t already know, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Wii U all use some form of AMD tech and Su told investors and analysts that these new “design wins” should bring in $1.5 billion for AMD in the next few years. AMD cited a new $293 million licensing deal with Tianjin Haiguang Advanced Technology Investment Co.to develop processors for the Chinese server market – in addition to its semicustom business – for its forecast of an 15 percent, plus or minus 3 percent, increase in revenue for the second quarter of 2016.
