One of the two suspects in the priest’s killing in northern France was known to anti-terror authorities after attempting a trip to Syria, a French anti-terrorism prosecutor said.
Youngest of the three women had written a letter pledging allegiance to ISIS.
A bar employee working near Notre Dame had first raised the alert after noticing a gas cylinder on a seat of the parked Peugeot, police said.
Police sources had previously said no detonator device was found in the auto, but the presence of diesel-filled canisters added to concerns there had been a plan to explode the vehicle.
“It may have been that they were on a test run”, said a source close to the case. The auto also had its hazard lights flashing and had no registration. but no detonator, and one theory is that it was being used as a dry run for a terror attack in the city, which has been targeted several times in recent years. The man had reported that his auto and his daughter had gone and that his 19-year-old daughter had been “radicalised”. It said the 19-year-old woman stabbed the officer and was injured.
The auto was found on the Quai de Montebello, just metres from the cathedral, along a stretch of the Seine riverside.
A local resident who saw the women just before their arrest in Boussy-Saint-Antoine ( see point on map), south of Paris, said they “seemed anxious, looking around them all the time”. They arrested the three women when they left the flat. Another of the women had been engaged to the extremist who killed two French police officials earlier this year before he was shot to death, two officials said. Other officials said it was the teenager who attacked the officer. Isis propaganda was found on her computer at her home. The owner of the vehicle is the father of one of the suspects.
The suspects aged 19, 23 and 39 were “likely preparing a violent and imminent action”, he said. The changing threat took different forms and was very hard to detect, he added, as he called for the “vigilance of all citizens”.
“Others are out there”, French President Francois Hollande said on the sidelines of a summit of southern European states in Athens on Friday. “Information we were able to get from our intelligence services allowed us to act before it was too late”.
Paris prosecutor Francois Molins will give a news conference on the investigation at 1530 GMT Friday.
