The Model X was already the quickest SUV on Planet Earth, and now, it’s even quicker.

CEO Elon Musk said Tesla will offer a new 100-kilowatt-hour battery option for the Model S and Model X cars that have new “Ludicrous” modes.

Prices start at $135,700 for the Model S P100D and $136,700 for the Model X P100D.

The 100 kWh battery also increases range to an estimated 315 miles on a single charge, making it the first to go beyond 300 miles and the longest range production electric vehicle, according to Tesla.

The LaFerrari and the Porsche 918 Spyder can outrun the Tesla Model S sedan.

The new model will also available with a new 100kWh battery pack and P100D upgrade that allows the Model X to rip to 100km/h in 3.1 seconds – a time that easily eclipses the 4.0 seconds required by Bentley’s Bentayga SUV, and the 4.1s sprint of Porsche’s Cayenne Turbo S.

This is the longest range production electric vehicle by far.

Tesla has announced a long-awaited 100 kWh battery that will make its Model S the fastest auto in production globally, the company said, adding that although objectively the Model S P100D is the third-fastest vehicle in terms of acceleration, the other two – the Porsche 918 Spyder and LaFerarri – are no longer in production.

Tesla won’t say how many people have ordered the auto, or how many it plans to deliver in Australia.

Both models can be recharged for free at the ever-expanding network of Tesla’s Supercharger stations.

Tesla customers who have ordered a P90D Ludicrous, but not taken delivery, can upgrade to the 100 kWh pack for $10,000. And every Tesla will improve over time with free over the air upgrades.

The company also acknowledged in a blog post that the updated vehicles, while expensive, would “help pay for the smaller and much more affordable Tesla Model 3 that’s in development”. If you’re buying brand-new, the Model S P100D will cost $134,500, or $20,000 more than the previous top-of-the-line Model S P90D.
