A report released Wednesday by the Senate showed the airbag crisis extends beyond used cars, disclosing that at least four automakers are selling new vehicles equipped with the potentially deadly Takata airbag inflators, like the one in Vu’s auto.
Ford Motor Co.is recalling almost 1.9 million vehicles in North America to replace faulty passenger-side front air bags made by Japanese supplier Takata Corp.
Fiat Chrysler, Mitsubishi, Toyota and Volkswagen acknowledged they’ve been installing the air bags in new vehicles.
The largest USA automaker is recalling the vehicles even though it doesn’t believe what it called unique Takata inflators made for GM vehicles pose a safety risk. With all its years in the industry, it has collected an very impressive roster of clients, including Toyota, Chrysler, Volkswagen and Mitsubishi.
Ford is expanding its recall of Takata airbags, and now we’re learning some brand new cars are being sold with defective airbags in them. It all stems from the Japanese auto parts maker’s move last month to declare up to 40 million USA inflators defective.
The transport ministry in April began going to the homes of people who own vehicles equipped with potentially faulty Takata Corp. air bag inflators to accelerate repairs, ministry sources said Saturday.

At least 13 deaths worldwide have been linked to the defective air bags, whose inner workings are sensitive to moisture and can rupture, sending shrapnel flying toward the car’s passengers.
These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal airbag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment. Two other deaths are under investigation in Malaysia.

The NHTSA has a list of affected vehicles and pertinent recall information on their website. “It is absolutely ridiculous that the American consumer can buy a new vehicle today and not know that it will be recalled in two years”. Driver side airbag inflators in these vehicles are not included in this recall. Eight automakers announced recalls of more than 12 million vehicles as a result.
