Kumble’s first assignment will be India’s four-test tour of West Indies.

The committee comprising greats Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly had interviewed 10 candidates for the job in Kolkata on Tuesday in a marathon session which lasted close to 10 hours.

Kumble is the first Indian to be appointed full time India coach since former skipper Kapil Dev resigned in September 2000.

The board had received a total of 57 responses to its advertisement for the job, and 21 of them were shortlisted for the advisory committee to review. I have always put my hands up for any sort of challenge. “It’s about who is the best for Indian cricket”.

Ganguly and Chappell shared a turbulent relationship during the Australian’s tenure, with the period between 2005 and 2007 one of upheaval for the India cricket team. With 619 wickets, he is India’s highest Test wicket taker.

The 43-year-old did not rule out seeing himself as Team India’s coach in the future, admitting that the thought did cross his mind a couple of years back.

It was reported that Kumble’s two-hour long presentation, where he discussed roadmap for Team India home and overseas across formats, impressed the three-man committee.

Though Kumble lacks experience as a coach, he has served as the mentor of the Indian Premier League sides – Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians.

“He has been a match-winner for India”.

“It’s a great honour and a great responsibility to coach the Indian team”.

Kumble played 132 Tests and 271 one-day internationals for India, taking 956 wickets in the two formats. The strategy of course is to win. Of course, the other stakeholders as far as cricket is concerned will also have to come in. I haven’t really spoken to the players.

“Need to sit down with Sourav, Sachin, Laxman and Dravid and need to do what is best for Indian cricket”, adds the new Indian cricket coach.

Won't mess up like I did while recommending Chappell: Sourav Ganguly
