“Ten persons sustained serious injuries and they were rushed to nearby hospitals”, Press Trust of India quoted Dipendra Pathak, joint commissioner of West Delhi Range Police, as saying.

At least 10 people are still believed to be trapped in the debris of the building in Western Delhi’s Vishnu Garden area and rescuers are trying to find them. “I wish speedy recovery to the injured persons”, Mukherjee said, according to a Rashtrapati Bhavan statement.

He said strict action will be taken “against the culprits”.

Most infamously in recent years, in September 2013, a five-storey building in the region around the Mazagaon docks in Mumbai crumbled, leaving 61 people dead.

An FIR has registered against the building’s owner for negligence and culpable homicide.

Senior BJP leader and South Delhi Mayor Subhash Arya, who visited the accident site this morning along with other senior officials of SDMC, countered the allegation and blamed the AAP MLAs over the incident. High housing demand and lax regulations have resulted in the construction of multi-storey buildings without adequate supervision.

The area district magistrate has also announced compensation for the victims as per the government norms. Whether MCD allowed it or not? Maken said that the AAP’s first cabinet’s decision to stop demolition of unauthorized construction is responsible for such incidents leading to death of many.

Police suspect the building, located in a narrow, winding lane, was illegally built. “Obviously, water collected and loosened the foundation of the building”, he added.
