New engines and better tech for sports SUV

A 2.0-litre diesel in a Range Rover Sport? Just like the larger Range Rover, one of the most useful for Range Rover owners will be Advanced Tow Assist, that can automatically park the vehicle when a trailer is attached and can warn if the driver is about to jack-knife the trailer.

Not much has changed in the looks department, though inside you do at last get the rather good InControl Touch Pro infotainment system, which makes everything look and feel that bit more modern.

The arrival of the Ingenium 2-litre diesel and the 3-litre petrol units are part of a package of updates for the 2017 model year.

Named SD4 HSE, the Range Rover Sport with that engine manages the 0-60mph dash in 8.0sec and is the new entry-level option in the Range Rover Sport range, priced from £59,700. This all-aluminum engine has a 60 mph (96 km/h) sprint time of exactly 8 seconds, with the automaker estimating a 45.6 mpg United Kingdom fuel economy – Carbon dioxide emissions being approximated at 164 grams per kilometer. The 3.0-litre model has a claimed 26.9mpg and Carbon dioxide emissions of 243g/km and a 0-60mph time of 7.1sec.

A wider selection of paint colours is also available, with a new Bright Pack – optional on Autobiography Dynamic models – that brightens metallic exterior trim. You can also use “pinch-and-zoom” gestures on the navigation screen and control much of the rest of the auto using smartphone and tablet-like gestures, including swiping between menus. The new auto also gets an updated All-Terrain Information Centre, which shows useful off-roading information, such as the direction the wheels are pointing, a wade sensor and camera views of the surrounding terrain. Yep, this is a 2.0-litre Range Rover that isn’t an Evoque. That Drive Pack also includes a Driver Condition Monitor which analyses driving style to guard against fatigue.

When activated, the speed limiter uses traffic sign recognition to read speed limit signs and prevent the auto from exceeding the limit. Lending the vehicle a “more vivid” finish, its Atlas Silver front grille and bonnet mesh should ensure nobody will hold you up on the outside lane of the M40. 19 new premium colours have been introduced, ranging from pearlescent whites to greys in high-gloss and new satin finishes.
