The protests in California were largely aimed not at Turner, but at Judge Aaron Persky, who sentenced the ex-Stanford University student to six months jail time following his conviction in the sexual assault of an unconscious, intoxicated woman on campus in January 2015. “My family and I have endured over a year of inexplicable, unnecessary suffering, and he should face the consequences of challenging his crime, of putting my pain into question, of making us wait so long for justice”.
California attorney general Kamala Harris added her voice to the criticism, questioning whether the facts “merit that kind of mitigation”.
At a protest today in Santa Clara, Calif., Rep. Loretta Sanchez said, “Today, Brock Turner is a free man”. He received “hundreds of pieces of hate mail”, James Jensen of the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office told ABC News.
Like other sex offenders, Turner will be monitored by a probation officer for three years.

Typical requirements for Tier III offenders include registering their address and personal information with law enforcement every 90 days for the rest of their lives. The bill is now heading to California Gov. Jerry Brown would allow earlier parole for thousands of California inmates to control overcrowding in state prisons and rein in costs.
