New Jersey commuter buses collide, killing 1, injuring 18

A bus driver in New Jersey was killed when the transit bus he was driving collided with another bus Friday morning.

Joseph Barthelus, the driver of the bus carrying no passengers, was killed.

The Essex County prosecutor is investigating the crash.

They were joined by employees from the nearby Starbucks, who, after seeing the crash, rushed out with first aid kits, water and ice packs for the wounded, according to CNN affiliate WPIX. The National Transportation Safety Board said it was not involved in the investigation.

Officials in Newark and other towns claimed the red light cameras reduced accidents.

Petrain says she saw people with head and leg injuries.

A No. 59 bus without any passengers was heading back to Newark when the driver T-boned a No. 13 bus at the intersection, officials said.

Many passengers were entangled in twisted metal seats covered in shards of glass as the force of the crash tipped the occupied bus at a 30-degree angle as it came to rest on a median.

Emergency crews are removing people on stretchers from a commuter bus that was struck by another in Newark, New Jersey.

Several ambulances and fire trucks responded to the accident and several people appeared to be getting treatment from emergency personnel.

Video footage showed at least one bus on its side and the top of it partially split.

The number of injured and the extent of their injuries are not known.

A NJ Transit spokeswoman could not immediately comment.

Witness Khalil Smith was at the bus stop when the crash happened and also ran in to help.

Two commuter buses have collided in New Jersey’s largest city.

“We believe that all those passengers will be OK at this time”, said Christopher Trucillo, Chief of Police, New Jersey Transit.
