While Corbyn has little support within the parliamentary party, there was a sense that his support at grassroots level remained strong.

“If we stick with Corbyn we will be out of power for 30 years”.

Give the grown-ups back control of the Labour party.

The High Court case was triggered by the decision by Labour’s governing body, the National Executive Committee’s (NEC), that full members could only vote if they had at least six months’ continuous membership up to July 12 – the “freeze date”.

“It looks to me like he’s probably going to win”.

The result of the leadership election is expected to be announced at a special conference on September 24.

Corbyn went on to lose a confidence vote of his own MPs by 172 votes to 40.

Ilford South Labour MP Mike Gapes tweeted this morning: “I’m Labour”.

“[Now] I can vote as was my right and I will vote for Corbyn to continue to be leader”.

Mr Smith challenged other parties to follow his lead in what he said was a first step towards an honours system that would “reward selfless acts, not political and personal patronage”.

Mr Vaz told Sky News: “We were told that this was an independent inquiry and if it transpired that Shami Chakrabarti was offered her peerage before she was appointed or during the time she was appointed to conduct that inquiry then we needed to have been told”.

He also outlined plans for “a new industrial revolution” to make the United Kingdom into “the workshop of the world”.

“For too long, successive governments have allowed our economy to be too reliant on financial services and the creation of insecure, low-skilled, and low-paid jobs”, Smith will say, according to extracts of his speech e-mailed by his office.

Mr Cameron nominated 13 new life peers, including Conservative donors and Downing Street staff, while Mr Corbyn also attracted criticism by nominating civil liberties campaigner Shami Chakrabarti shortly after she completed a report on allegations of anti-Semitism in the Labour Party.

Speaking to the Huffington Post UK, Mr Corbyn rejected shadow chancellor John McDonnell’s suggestion that it was “inevitable” both of them would step down if Labour lost the general election.

“We must have a bold mission for Britain – to undergo a new industrial revolution”.
