They finally decided on Carolyn Palmer, a sculptress whose marble rendition of Pope Francis last year received much acclaim and was even blessed by the Pope himself during his visit to the United States last year.
She could hardly do worse than Dave Poulin, whose 2009 version was so thoroughly panned as looking nothing like the comic actress that a Facebook campaign was launched a year ago with the name “We Love Lucy!” You can get a peek at the more flattering Lucille Ball statue, which was created by sculptor Carolyn Palmer, below.
A new Lucille Ball statue will be revealed on Saturday on what would have been the “Queen of Comedy’s” 105th birthday.
While her statue is getting raves, Carolyn Palmer has sympathy for Dave Poulin, the creator of “Scary Lucy”.
The “Lovely Lucy” statue that will replace the “Scary Lucy’ in Celoron, New York, came about after many of Lucille Ball’s fans, who vehemontly disliked the “Scary Lucy” statue showing Ball tasting Vitametavegamin, began a campaign that went viral to have the statue removed”. She used models that were Lucille Ball’s height wearing vintage clothing to create the new more glamorous version of Lucille Ball.
Palmer says that research was key to capturing not just Ball’s movements, but also a sense of the era.
A bronze version of that statue is being produced for St. Patrick’s Cathedral in NY.
“Overall, I just really, really hope that I please the town of Celoron, please Lucy’s family and all her fans”. She wears a slight smirk on her face and a string of pearls around her neck, with her hair in the tight curls she wore throughout her career. The statue was unveiled August 6 on what would have been Ball’s 105th birthday. A new statue of Ball is being unveiled Saturday, Aug. 6, 2016, in the late actress’ hometown to replace this one that was so hated it was dubbed “Scary Lucy”.

“I’m a thin-skinned person and artists are sensitive, and I do feel bad for that other fellow”, she explained.
