Ryan Ogrodnik, the dean of enrollment services at EGCC, said the college will offer as many options to students as possible.

Southwestern Michigan College is working to help students displaced by the closure of ITT Technical Institute this week.

It’s likely some students will want to transfer their ITT Tech credits to another institution and continue their education. That includes the one located on Meridian Road in Austintown.

The chain was banned August 25 from enrolling new students who used federal financial aid, because, federal officials said, the company had become a risk to students and taxpayers. ITT has put up $90 million in surety funds that could be used to cover some of the student debt-relief option.

If you are now or were recently enrolled at ITT, you may be eligible to have your federal student loans for your program at ITT discharged. The Department of Education will post and update information about how to receive a discharge at the ITT announcements page.

Students of schools that abruptly shut down have a few different routes they can take to continue their education and have their student loan debt forgiven.
