A New Mexico official says a man arrested in the killing of a 10-year-old Albuquerque girl was supposed to be on supervised probation from an unrelated case but wasn’t being monitored by probation officers.
The charred body of a girl who had been raped, murdered and dismembered was found on her 10th birthday in an apartment in New Mexico, police say.
Neighbor John Madrid frequently saw Victoria around the apartment complex and in the morning, waiting for her school bus. Parts of her body were wrapped up in plastic bags and hidden in the laundry hamper, added police.
Police spokesman Tanner Tixier emotionally told reporters the girl’s body was so mutilated that investigators were unsure how she died.
It is reported she had been injected with methamphetamine, sexually assaulted, strangled and stabbed before she was dismembered. On the day the girl was going to celebrate h.
“This homicide is the most gruesome act of evil I have ever seen in my career”, said Police Chief Gorden Eden.
Michelle Martens, Victoria’s 35-year-old mother, along with Michelle’s 31-year-old boyfriend, Fabian Gonzales, have confessed to the abuse and murder, stating that they injected methamphetamines into the 10-year-old girl’s system in order “to make her calm down so they could do what they wanted with the little girl”.
All three face charges of kidnapping, child abuse resulting in death and tampering with evidence, according to police. The three were taken into custody late Wednesday night. They did not identify her because authorities were still trying Thursday to reach some relatives to notify them of the girls death. No details were disclosed about why she was hospitalized.
In the interim, Judge Linda Rogers set bail at $1 million each for Martens and Gonzales as their lawyer declined to comment on the charges agains them….
There were dozens of balloons, stuffed animals, flowers and candles. Some hugged while others cried and prayed.
Christie Zamora said Victoria attended her gymnastics class every Saturday and always seemed happy.
“She was a light”, she said through tears. Its just so tragic..
School officials said in a statement that, like the rest of the community, their hearts ache. The Children, Youth, and Families Department has relayed to the media that they will also begin doing their own investigation once the police have called them to the scene of the crime. Tixier said she showed no remorse when talking to detectives, the Albuquerque Journal reported. According to the complaint, Gonzales said his cousin hit him and Martens with an iron, prompting him to jump over the balcony and run to a neighboring apartment for help.
The call to police came just before dawn on Wednesday after a neighbor called to report a ‘disturbance’ at the apartment next door.
Gonzales has a previous criminal history which includes a felony child abuse charge, driving while intoxicated and resisting arrest.
She also pleaded no contest to charges of assaulting a police officer in 2007 and shoplifting in 2009.
She’s faced numerous drug and domestic violence related charges in the past as well, many of which were dismissed.
Gonzales also is charged with criminal sexual penetration of a minor.
Jessica Kelley had reportedly been released from prison four days earlier and was staying at Martens home.
