New Mexico gets $400K from CDC to fight Zika

Federal health officials warn that the fund to battle the virus is rapidly depleting.

The state’s first confirmed case was reported in February in Missoula County.

Health officials said the Zika virus is nearly always a very mild illness and approximately 80 percent of those infected never show symptoms of the disease.

“It just hasn’t happened yet”, Lunders said.

“While this is good news, and proof that our education and mosquito control efforts are working, we will not become complacent and will continue to aggressively fight against the Zika virus”, Scott said. In addition, the region is home to other Aedes species, but it’s unknown whether they could be transmitters.

The Zika virus is also linked to instances of microcephaly – a developmental defect resulting in a smaller-than-normal head or brain – in newborns.

Some 80 percent of those infected with Zika had symptoms.

In response to the outbreak, Scott called on the federal government to reach a deal on Zika prevention funding. But experts cautioned that many questions about the virus remain. These symptoms can be mild and last for several days and up to a week.

He added: “We have already informed the at-risk groups about the risks and how to protect themselves through Health Protection Scotland’s travel advice”.

“The reason for this is they are southern cities and this is where the majority of the mosquito that transmits this can have a longer season”. Once infected, the mosquito would pass along the virus by biting another human directly.

Louisiana health care providers are on “heightened alert” following newly reported cases of Zika and a nationwide push to assess every US pregnant woman for the virus.

Florida health officials announced another non-travel related case of Zika on Tuesday, bringing the total to 15.

Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the CDC, said it has been hard to control the mosquito population in the 1-square-mile area.

Avoiding mosquito bites remains the best protection, health officials say. And he’s letting everyone know exactly what the problem is and how to get rid of it.
