New Mexico Jobless Rate Still Far Above National Average

The adjusted rate for December in New Mexico was 6.6 percent, according to the Department of Workforce Solutions.

Arkansas’ job market got off to a strong start in 2016 as the state’s jobless rate fell three percentage points in January as more than 6,000 workers were added to the state’s growing labor pool, according to the figures released Monday by the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics. For January 2015, the rate was even higher at 6.3 percent.

Last year, Calhoun County’s unemployment rate for the month of January was 8 percent.

“We remain committed to lowering Alabama’s unemployment rate, but we are even more committed to making sure that every Alabamian who wants a job has the opportunity to have one”, said Gov. Robert Bentley.

Nationally, January’s unemployment rate was 4.9 percent. MS had the highest state unemployment rate, at 6.7 percent. The number of people working increased by 10,853, setting a new record of people working in the state at 2.1 million, according to the SCDEW.

Private sector payroll jobs increased 4,300 and government increased 900, the release stated.

Past year at this time, Bamberg County’s unemployment rate was 12.2 percent. The construction segment added more than 1,100 jobs.

Nonfarm payrolls increased 5,200 with gains in the business and professional services, leisure and hospitality and manufacturing sectors.

Weld County’s unemployment rate in January fell further, following a yearlong trend, to 3.3 percent, but sat just above the state unemployment rate. Leisure and hospitality dropped by 3,500 positions.

In the Trade, Transportation and Utilities sector – Arkansas’ largest job sector – employment fell from December’s all-time high with an estimated 254,300 workers in the labor pool, compared to 262,400 in December and well ahead of the 245,800 in January 2015.

For January, initial claims for unemployment insurance edged up 10 from December to 311.
