New Mexico Town Plagued By Elk Deaths
Now here is some really baffling piece of news. Turns out, nearly 100 elks have died in a town in New Mexico and that too all in one day. This sudden spate of deaths has the authorities baffled. There can be a number of factors like disease, drought, heat starvation etc, which one would argue has something to do with the deaths. But, it still doesn’t explain how the steadfast and robust elk died in such large numbers within a 24-hour period. The blood of all the dead elks were sent for a test and the reports revealed that there were no unusual substances in the blood that would have caused such a tragedy.

It has also been ascertained by the authorities that this wasn’t the work of poachers. There is very slim possibility that lightning strike which is strong enough can kill 100 animals at one go, but this possibility seems highly unlikely as such an event rarely occurs. It has also been confirmed that the water body from which the elks have their daily drink of water is free of toxins. The possibility of a sudden onset of some mysterious illness has also been ruled out. Authorities are doing their best to get to the bottom of this, so the actual cause can be learnt.
Anything that is unknown or out of the ordinary is something we as human beings are not at all comfortable with and this incident presents just such a quandary. Such unexplained incidents also give rise to urban legends and stories about creatures that logic dictates can’t really exists. The Mexican Chupacabra is one such mythical creature, which is often blamed when livestock mysteriously disappear or are killed and mutilated. Just last year the Chupacabra was blamed for the killing of 300 goats in a village, but it was later discovered that it was the work of feral canines.
For now the reason behind the death of the elks remains shrouded in mystery and if soon a logical explanation isn’t found, it wouldn’t be surprising if a certain section of the society begins attributing the deaths to some mythical creature. Hence, for the sake of people’s sanity, here’s hoping that scientists manage to come up with a reasonable explanation soon.

The video I saw dated August 28th showed elk in the second stage of decomposition (gas bloating), which would put the death of the elk herd on or before August 20th, 2013.
The only other near-instantaneous die-off I’ve heard about from around this date is the August 21st death of Syrian civilians by nerve agent gassing.
