Investigators say that the suspects fled south on I-25 and drove to a rest area. The name of the injured officer hasn’t been released but police say the officer is a two-year veteran.

Authorities say 38-year-old Jesse Hanes, who is wanted in OH on a murder charge, fatally shot 33-year-old Hatch Police Officer Jose Chavez during a traffic stop Friday.

The shooting occurred when the unidentified officer pulled over a vehicle in Hatch on Friday, according to the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Department.

Chavez was conducting a regular traffic stop when a passenger exited the vehicle and began firing shots at his police cruiser.

The Associated Press reported that the officer had been struck in the neck. A manhunt had been underway in OH for the pair after they were identified as suspects in the murder of Timmons.

Two of the three suspects apprehended Friday have been identified by The Chillicothe Gazette as James Nelson II, 36, and Jesse Hanes, 38, and were reportedly taken into custody on murder warrants stemming from the fatal shooting last month of a Londonberry, Ohio man.

KRQE reports the second officer engaged in a high speed chase with the shooter along Interstate 25.

With officer Chavez bleeding out at the scene, the driver led another cop on a unsafe, high speed auto chase through the state. Hanes had a gunshot wound to the leg and was taken to a local hospital, Jameson said. The wound appeared to have been self-inflicted, she said. The condition of the driver is now unknown.

After a 100 miles per hour chase, one suspect shot and carjacked the driver of a Red Chevy Cruze at a rest stop near Radium Springs after 4 p.m., which triggered a multi-jurisdictional manhunt.

Deputies spotted the stolen vehicle nearby.

Authorities were able to deflate the vehicle’s tires with “stop sticks”, Jameson said, but the driver was able to turn the vehicle into a residence in the 23000 block of N.M. 185. “The suspect was unable to control that vehicle, and it crashed into a pile of wood and came to rest”, she said.
