New national monuments coming in Texas, California, Nevada

The presidential move brings to 19 the number of monuments that Obama has created or expanded since taking office. “Today we accomplished something that will last for generations”. “Because they don’t go through the process, they don’t think ahead, they don’t solve the problems ahead of time”. The Antiquities Act was signed into law in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt.

In addition to Waco, Berryessa Snow Mountain in California and Basin and Range in Nevada were named national monuments for their historic landscapes.

BERRYESSA SNOW MOUNTAIN NATIONAL MONUMENT, Calif. (AP) — California has a new national monument: a swath of gold and green coastal range that stretches more than 100 miles and is home to bears, badgers, mountain lions and a host of other wildlife.

Fellow Utah Republican Jason Chaffetz said presidents should be barred from using the Antiquities Act within any county that has enacted a land management plan.

“It is said when asked about the heartfelt concerns of Nevadans who oppose the monument the president responded “I don’t care, I want this done””, Hardy said in a speech Friday morning. “There is nothing Obama announced that had anything to do with the criteria”, Bishop said.

Also designated is an area of over 700,000 acres of Nevada’s Basin and Range known as the Great Basin Region. “That’s not an antiquity”. Two Waco residents spotted bones in a ravine in 1978, and skeletons of 24 mammoths have since been identified, ranging from age 3 to 55 and dating to about 68,000 years ago.

“The President acted in response to the overwhelming support expressed by local communities and stakeholders across the country for protecting these places of extraordinary environmental, historical and scientific value”, said Gene Karpinski, head of the League of Conservation Voters.

Reid, the Senate minority leader, was crucial to the cause, Govan says.

“And for me to be able to add to that heritage is greatly appreciated”, he said.

“The sculpture is one of the most ambitious and singularly important works, in my estimation, of [contemporary] art, particularly in the United States”, Govan says. The designation will also promote tourism and outdoor recreation across the region.

The City of Waco has operated the Waco Mammoth Site since 2009, and it donated about 5 acres to the USA government to make it possible to set up the national monument.

The site has been maintained by Baylor University, the City of Waco and the Waco Mammoth Foundation. “The President’s action will help boost local economies and ensure that the area’s unique natural, cultural, and recreational resources are protected for generations to come”.
