New No. Kerber holds off Pliskova to win US Open
Stan Wawrinka on Sunday became the oldest US Open men’s champion in 46 years when he defeated world No. 1 Novak Djokovic to claim a third Grand Slam title. It was her first final, she had dropped her ranking in 2015, and was a surprise finalist after a mediocre year.

Then she reached the finals of the US Open against Czech Republic’s Karolina Pliskova.
For now, she will have to time to reflect on her recent experiences which included a U.S. television breakfast-show appearance alongside Hollywood star Patrick Dempsey and Italian film icon Sophia Loren.
And he did it Sunday against Djokovic, whose French Open title in June completed a career Grand Slam and made him only the third man – and first in almost a half-century – to win four consecutive major tournaments.
With her plans for the rest of 2016 up in the air, Williams’s coach Patrick Mouratoglou acknowledged that a season with just two titles – even if one of them was Wimbledon – wasn’t up to the American’s standards.
It’s time to vote for August’s WTA Player of the Month! That is, until Saturday, when she reversed the score with her W&S opponent, winning in a thrilling final, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. “When I was a kid I was always dreaming to be the No. 1 player in the world, to win Grand Slams and today is the day I won my second Grand Slam, especially here in NY”. By all accounts, 2016 has been a great year for both: Australian, Wimbledon and Olympic finals.
He has now won 11 tournament finals in a row.
“It’s just incredible”, Kerber said in her on-court interview after the US Open final, emotionally. That is the best year in my career.
NEW YORK, NY – SEPTEMBER 12: 2016 US Open Women’s Champion Angelique Kerber and 2016 US Open Men’s Champion Stan Wawrinka are seen prior to their apearance on Live! with Kelly during their Trophy Tour on September 12, 2016 in New York City.
“This year everything came together”.
The woman who overtook 22-time Grand Slam women’s singles champion Serena Williams for the top ranking in the WTA added that she is just as motivated as ever to improve her game. Pliskova, the now-world no. 6, is another. She further said, “She told me I was in a good way, to believe in myself, and one day the time will be there”.
Kerber said the enormity of winning her second slam of the year and attaining world number one would probably not sink in until a quiet moment after she boarded her flight home.

But her team had total confidence in Kerber and egged her on to keep practicing and practicing even while she seemed on top of her game already. And like a fine wine, she has only gotten better with age.
