New Orleans firefighters at building fire on Canal Street

Firefighters in New Orleans continue to battle a stubborn six-alarm fire in buildings on historic Canal Street.

McConnell said there were businesses on the first floor, but he was not sure about the upper floors.

Fire trucks were seen heading to the fire around 4 a.m. Live television pictures from the scene show flames leaping from the roof. The one person in the building was able to make it out.

Fire officials say the fire is under investigation, but the cause is not suspicious.

“Our main concern is to keep the flames from spreading to nearby buildings”, the chief said.

McConnell said firefighters are still working to bring the fire under control.

A fourth alarm was called for at 3:39 a.m.as the fire began to intensify and fire personnel realized the high probability of the structure’s collapse.

“They told us it was safe to stay”, Otto said.
