McConnell said there were businesses on the first floor, but he was not sure about the upper floors.
Fire trucks were seen heading to the fire around 4 a.m. Live television pictures from the scene show flames leaping from the roof. The one person in the building was able to make it out.
Fire officials say the fire is under investigation, but the cause is not suspicious.
“Our main concern is to keep the flames from spreading to nearby buildings”, the chief said.
McConnell said firefighters are still working to bring the fire under control.
WGNO Viewer Angela Trumbaturi shared these photos, via twitter, of heavy smoke from that 6 alarm fire in the CBD this morning.
A fourth alarm was called for at 3:39 a.m.as the fire began to intensify and fire personnel realized the high probability of the structure’s collapse.
