Payton has spent his entire nine-year head coaching career in New Orleans, where he’s amassed an 87-57 regular-season record, while going 6-4 in the playoffs.

ESPN’s Ed Werder is reporting the new deal carries an average salary of more than $9 million.

Sean Payton told reporters at the coaches meetings in Boca Raton today that he has agreed on a five-year extension, though he hasn’t signed it yet.

Payton: On contract – Another 5 years means a lot. “There’s so much of you in there, that I don’t see myself working anywhere else”, Payton said of his decade in New Orleans.

Saints coach Sean Payton said on Pro Football Talk on NBCSN last month that he was close to finalizing an extension with the team and nothing seems to have gotten in the way since then. “There’s been really good stability and consistency at ownership”. “That stability, I don’t take for granted”. He has led the Saints to five postseason bids and the only Super Bowl win in franchise history.

Payton, 52, has coached the Saints since 2006, though he was suspended for the 2012 season as a result of “Bountygate”. “But I know there’s been quite a bit of dialogue”.
