New Orleans Saints: Will Defense Cost Sean Payton His Job?

The C.J. Spiller experiment is over in New Orleans. They inked him to a four-year contract that included a $20 million signing bonus to lure Smith away from Kansas City. The saving grace for that secondary is they were able to get some playing time last week. He told ESPN’s Josina Anderson of his release that he “didn’t see it coming”. If you didn’t start Ware, I’m not sure what you were waiting on. I have nothing but good relationships that I have built here. On top of that, they need to force some takeaways. “So, I definitely don’t have any hard feelings”. Now, I’m just going to wait for the next right opportunity.

Head coach Sean Payton of the New Orleans Saints reacts during the second half of a game at Mercedes-Benz Superdome on September 11, 2016 in New Orleans, Louisiana. A league source confirmed that it wasn’t health-related.

“I think all of them bring something unique to the table”, Brees said. They were horrendous against the pass last season, and after the departure of their ex-number 1 cornerback in Brandon Browner and last week’s injury to their number 1 cornerback for this season in Delvin Breaux, the Giants have a huge advantage passing the football this week. I think they’re much improved. “It takes a lot of time on task, which we’ve spent”, Brees said. He missed 10 games in 2015 and 15 in ’14 due to injuries. “That’s pretty much what it was, bad technique. And that was really it”.

A good fit for Spiller would be with the New England Patriots. Manning has 12 touchdowns in his last three games against the Saints, including six last season to go with 350 yards. Things seemed to be going better this year, with Payton saying Spiller showed progress and some “juice” during training camp and the preseason.

The benching came after he was burned by Brandin Cooks for a 98-yard touchdown, the longest pass play in Saints franchise history. The Saints didn’t have any easy time running against the Raiders, who do have a very respectable front seven, to begin with. He went for 130 yards and had three touchdowns to go along with it. Triplett says it is over $40 million in dead money; according to Spotrac, it is $37.8 million, which is still over a quarter of the total $146.4 million the team has used in cap space. The other two are rookie undrafted free agents.

Over $12 million of the Saints’ 2016 cap is now being paid to linebacker Junior Galette, who hasn’t played in New Orleans since 2014.

Spiller’s career has been in a steady decline since rushing for 1,244 yards and six touchdowns in 2012 to earn his only Pro Bowl selection.

After being drafted by the Buffalo Bills, Spiller made his biggest impact on special teams, netting over 1,000 kick return yards and scoring a touchdown.
