Marvel’s Iron Fist is streaming on Netflix now. Colleen has to wrestle with the idea that the beliefs she was raised to have-namely, that a faction of the Hand was doing good and helping people better themselves-was just was nothing more than a front, a lie predicated on her belief in honor and justice. There is struggle in this story… we just didn’t see any of it.
-Before the arrival of “Iron Fist”, the latest series to come from a Marvel-Netflix team-up, some pop culture consumers found the show’s storyline offensive. “Game of Thrones” actor Finn Jones plays Rand in the series.
“Oriental is a term used to describe rugs, not people”, wrote “Iron Fist” star Jessica Henwick in a tweet. Even the commonly accepted franchise “losers” – The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2 and Thor: The Dark World – are “Certified Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes, with 67%, 72% and 66% ratings respectively.
Despite Thomas’ pleas that “if they had decided to make Iron Fist an Asian, that would have been fine with me, too”, many people took umbrage with his answer-in particular, his usage of the term “Oriental”.
Iron Fist did not get off to the best start, locked into a cultural appropriation narrative before it even began. This allows him to focus his chi energy into a single, powerful blow, or, as the original comics put it time and again, make his fist “like unto a thing of iron”.
The superhero series has attracted controversy for its white savior premise, with many fans decrying the show’s cultural appropriation and arguing that an Asian or Asian-American actor should have been cast in the lead role.
While in the comics, Danny Rand’s titular iron fist is engulfed in a fiery yellow aura, the series could seemingly only afford to turn his hand into a sickly yellow-green glowstick for the few scenes they showed it off at all. A purple-masked Steel Serpent coming after Danny in a second season could be just the thing to make up for Iron Fist not actually being Iron Fist in “Iron Fist“. Whenever someone says something negative to me, I remind of exactly how many days we have left until Christmas.

“And obviously I can do my own fight sequences, so those would be more dynamic”. He added: “We just don’t have enough Asian heroines out there, and I’m really jazzed to see her”. There’s no more of an outsider than an Asian-American: We feel like outsiders in Asia and we feel like outsiders at home. Iron Fist was the name taken on by a long line of heroes, of different backgrounds and ethnicities. The unlikely duo starred in some terrifically fun stories, but were exiled to comic book limbo for a while once the series ended.
