New QB Cowboys Sanchez begins practice

They are focused on winning games during his absence behind rookie quarterback sensation Dak Prescott, who will start against the New York Giants in the September 11 season opener and newly signed veteran Mark Sanchez will be the backup. The Cowboys made room for Sanchez on the roster by waiving Jameill Showers instead of placing Romo on injured reserve.

“We don’t have anybody valuable enough to take up that lost spot to give us the opportunity to see how [Romo] does”, Jones told 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. You don’t have to spend a lot of time, going over and kind of circumcising a mosquito.

“We don’t have a situation on the 53”. That’s the deciding factor. Seven players on the 53-man roster are inactive on game days anyway.

By keeping Romo on the active roster, the Cowboys are hoping Romo can return in October.

After holding off on adding a veteran following Moore’s injury, the Cowboys knew they would have to add one once Romo got hurt.

A last minute drive from the Giants ends with a Byron Jones interception, and the Cowboys start off 2016 with a thrilling win. He could miss six to 10 weeks, opening the door for rookie Dak Prescott to start Week 1.

THE LAST WORD: Tight end Jason Witten, going into his 14th season, was the creator of the “same old story” line from a few years ago when the Cowboys kept missing the playoffs with losses that dropped them to 8-8 on the final day of the season.

Prescott will be backed up by veteran Mark Sanchez, who practiced with the Cowboys for the first time Monday. Sanchez is no threat to take Prescott’s job as of now, and could be out of work again when Romo returns.

Jones said Tuesday that Romo is doing “fine” mentally. “You look at the stars for the Pro Bowls on some of these lockers that I will be out there on the field with”.
