New Reports of Sexual Transmission of Zika Virus

The Florida Department of Health says all cases are associated with travel and have not been locally acquired. The CDC advises women who are pregnant to consider postponing travel to any area where Zika virus transmission is ongoing.

Brazil, which has over 500 confirmed cases of microcephaly, reported the first cases of local transmission of Zika virus in May 2015.

The virus is typically spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito: the Aedes aegypti, which is not native to MI.

The virus is causing global alarm after spreading quickly in South and Central America and the Caribbean, with Brazil being the worst affected country. It is normally transmitted through bites by the Aedes mosquito. Sixty percent said they were aware of the possible association between Zika and birth defects.

Symptoms of the virus include fever, rash, joint pain, conjunctivitis, muscle pain and headache, the CDC said, though only one in five people infected with Zika display the symptoms, which resolve on their own.

Mr Dick said the government would also ensure Zika testing was carried out in conjunction with dengue fever tests from Monday. There is no vaccine to prevent or medicine to treat Zika. Recently, rumors claiming that something else other than the mosquito-borne virus has caused microcephaly and other birth defects have begun taking shape. The illness is usually mild with symptoms lasting several days to a week, Dallas County health officials said. Pregnant women who’ve traveled to those countries are tested automatically, symptomatic or not.

The Zika virus has now been found in semen, blood, urine, and saliva.

Sao Paulo has been conducting studies to identify areas most likely to contain breeding sites for the mosquito but the app would allow their data to be updated in real time.

Anthony Fauci, the NIH’s director of infectious diseases, said he has spent nearly his entire Ebola budget and had to shift other money to get a jump-start on Zika – but now they need more money to proceed.
