New sales back down to earth at Dubai airshow

Emirates, Air Arabia, Saudia and Oman Air may steal the show. Interestingly, Emirates SkyCargo is holding a press conference at Al Maktoum global Airport (DWC) on Tuesday, November 10, to formally introduce its move back to the airport in 2014.

Compared with the last 2013 airshow, which included announcements of $140 billion in Boeing and Airbus orders by four major Gulf carriers, this year’s event has been largely a chance for Gulf carriers to showcase their new planes and for worldwide businesses to meet potential aviation and aerospace clients in the region.

A $3 billion deal for 28 F/A-18E/F fighter jets for Kuwait that includes options for 12 more jets, and a separate deal for F-15 fighters for Qatar, have languished in the US regulatory process, according to sources familiar with the matter.

“The workers were satisfied with the mediation and ended their demonstration peacefully”, the government statement said, adding that the men’s employer was instructed “to clearly communicate contractual terms to the workers in order to prevent any future misunderstanding”.

India’s Jet Airways has announced the purchase of 75 Boeing 737 Max aircraft, worth around $8.25bn at list price, although airlines typically get discounts for large orders.

Emirates will not place any A380 orders this year unless Airbus commits to a re-engined Neo version of the plane to reduce fuel costs, Emirates president Tim Clark said in an interview at the show.

Ben Moores, senior analyst at IHS Aerospace, Defence and Security, said there is now a 750 wide-body aircraft order backlog from the Gulf region, so it is unlikely that further orders will be made at the show.

“It highlights how previous campaigns dominated by orders have now turned to the delivery phase as GCC airlines start to induct the jets they’ve ordered in the past”, Ahmad said.

Day one of the biennial Dubai Air Show came and went without a single passenger aircraft order.

Boeing Co. plans to establish a Middle East headquarters in Dubai. It’s simply not realistic, but I do expect the Dubai Airshow to match or exceed that what was announced in Paris.

Expansive, warm, and sunny, Dubai seems to have bypassed most other air shows, including Paris Le Bourget.
