Pierre Dorion has made his first major move as Ottawa Senators general manager, firing head coach Dave Cameron.

Assistant coaches Andre Tourigny, Jason Smith and goaltending coach Rick Wamsley have also been relieved of their coaching duties.

Smith, 42, finished his fourth season as a member of the Senators hockey staff and his second as a full-time assistant coach after initially being named to the position of scouting and development consultant on September 30, 2012.

Tourigny joined the Senators on July 1st following two seasons as an assistant coach with the Colorado Avalanche. The plan is to have that new coach in place by the time the draft rolls around in June.

“Definitely look at someone who will make a commitment to have our players play defence”, said Dorion.

“We’re going to hire someone good”.

He took over as head coach December 8, 2014 after the struggling team fired Paul MacLean.

In two years with the Senators, Cameron went 70-50-17 (.537) in 137 games.
