New space crew docks at ISS
The existing team of Peake, Kopra and Malenchenko will return to Earth on June 5, leaving behind Ovchinin, Williams and Skripochka as the main crew of Expedition 48. All three will spend the next six months working and living aboard the ISS, though neither America’s nor Russia’s space agencies have assigned crews for future year-long missions similar to the one featuring Kelly and cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko. The “space grandpa” is expected to enter the record books during his stint aboard the International Space Station.

NASA video shared on the International Space Station’s Twitter page show Russian cosmonauts Oleg Skripochka and Alexey Ovchinin entering the space station along with astronaut Jeff Williams, a grandfather who became the first three-time, long-term resident of the station. It ferried Russians Alexey Ovchinin and Oleg Skripochka along with NASA’s Jeff Williams.
The world record belongs to Russian cosmonaut Gennady Padalka, who returned from his fifth flight last September and has spent a total of 879 days in space.
Astronaut Scott Kelly may have just completed his year in space, but there’s another astronaut already looking to break some of his records. After completing his six month tenure, Williams will have completed 534 days in zero-gravity.
It is the first space mission for Ovchinin, while Skripochka will be aboard the space station for the second time.
Williams is set to make a new record as he tries to beat Scott Kelly’s stay in the ISS. That time, the International Space Station was under construction. If and when Williams complete this new mission, he will hold the record of being the American with the longest stay in space.
“Flying along with Ovchinin and his crewmates will be his daughter’s stuffed pink owl, which could be seen dangling in front of the camera inside Soyuz”.
Expedition 47 crew members NASA astronaut Jeff Williams, and Oleg Skripochka and Alexei Ovchinin of the Russian space agency Roscosmos. “The trio, riding in a Soyuz space capsule, is expected to rendezvous with the space station after a 6-hour journey, with docking set for 11:11 p. m. EDT (0311 GMT on March 19), according to NASA officials”.
Dan Huot, NASA’s spokeperson announced, “The Soyuz TMA-20M spacecraft [is] now safely in orbit, Jeff Williams, Aleksey Ovchinin and Oleg Skripochka on board and ready to chase down the International Space Station”.
“Godspeed and safe travels”, tweeted Peake minutes before the Soyuz launch.

NASA headquarters happily said their goodbyes and warm wishes to the crew, “Enjoy yourself, and take very good care of the space station for us”. The crew has been preparing for the arrival of an Orbital ATK cargo ship, which is scheduled to blast off from Florida on Tuesday.
