New ‘Star Wars’ Film Sets Box Office Record

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has set a new box office record.
Such an outcome would surprise few analysts, but the numbers were nevertheless eye-popping.
“The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2”, the fourth and last movie in the blockbuster franchise that turned Jennifer Lawrence into a Hollywood megastar, earned US$5.7 million, falling to fourth place in its fifth week in theatres.
It’s Thursday night previews take of $57 million eclipsed Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows Part 2 that had held the record for the biggest preview Thursday at $43.5 million. J.J. Abrams’ seventh chapter in George Lucas’s space saga arrived with the kind of hoopla and anticipation that few films have ever matched.
The estimated “Force Awakens” gross so far represents more than half the film’s $100 million-plus record in advance domestic ticket sales.
Disney’s biggest worry has been that moviegoers will be too daunted by sold-out shows and long lines. Saturday and Sunday will depend more on traditional walk-up business.
Disney said 47 percent of Thursday’s domestic ticket sales came from higher-priced 3D tickets.
Analysts say The Force Awakens opened on Thursday so would have to perform staggeringly well over the weekend to top the latest James Bond’s film’s £41.3m debut, which was calculated over seven days as it opened on a Monday. In New York, some of the city’s larger theatres were playing the film every hour, beginning at 6am.
There are two other box office records that Star Wars: The Force Awakens stands poised to topple as well.
Imax and 3-D screenings are helping to propel the record gross. Sequels and spinoffs are already in development for years to come, not to mention an entire corner of Disneyland devoted to the franchise.
Reviews turned out to be stellar as did early audience reaction, who gave the film an A CinemaScore.

When the 49-year-old behind The Force Awakens was initially offered the movie by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, he said he felt it was not the right move for him.
