New ‘Star Wars’ film smashes box office record
On Thursday night, “Force Awakens” grossed $57 million in North American theaters, shattering the record of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2”, which opened in summer 2011 with an overnight of $43.5 million.

Ticket sales are estimated to have made $238m (£159.7m) – the previous record was held by Jurassic World, which took $208.8m in June.
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger said “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” may reach $528 million in box-office sales worldwide in its record weekend debut, more than the company anticipated.

Force Awakens won’t hit the world’s second-largest theatrical market until Jan.9. Star Wars has also yet to roll out in India and Greece, two relatively minor markets.
In addition to its domestic total, Disney reports that The Force Awakens earned $279 million from the global market, giving the movie a worldwide opening total of $517 million. In North America alone it grossed $238 million.
Rounding out the eight most-popular movies this weekend, in the USA and Canada and as estimated by the studios and Rentrak, were “Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2” ($5.7 million), “Creed” ($5 million), “The Good Dinosaur” ($4.2 million), “Krampus” ($3.8 million) and “In The Heart Of The Sea” ($3.5 million). That’s just one of the records that The Force Awakens box office numbers smashed into oblivion, and it seems bound to potentially smash a few more as well.
Disney plans four “Star Wars” movies through 2019, plus major expansions at its us theme parks to incorporate the droids, spaceships and otherworldly creatures of the universe Lucas invented.
Star Wars does not share the same universal popularity as other films in certain key markets around the world, such as China. The Force Awakens was beaten by Jurassic World simply because it has yet to launch in China.

Analysts say the space saga could become the biggest selling movie of all time. Star Wars is more of a niche movie and doesn’t appeal to everyone, so the interest may not last as it did for James Cameron’s films.
