New ‘Star Wars’ grosses $120 mn to break first-day record
That puts it within striking distance of the global opening weekend record of $316.1 million and the record for a worldwide – that is foreign and domestic grosses combined – opening weekend of $524.9 million within range.

“The Force Awakens” hurtled toward $125 million in US and Canadian ticket sales on Friday and a potential record-breaking $225 million through Sunday, giving the long-awaited movie a shot at the biggest opening weekend of all time. The new “Star Wars” film is the first installment in a decade in the series created by George Lucas in 1977.
New studio estimates and Rentrak further estimate that the J.J. Abrams-directed Force Awakens will destroy the weekend box office record with at least a $225 million weekend total.
It made $57m on Thursday night, beating the previous record of $43.5m held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.
As far as all-time box office sales, two films by James Cameron hold the record “Avatar” ($2.78 billion) (roughly Rs. 18,435 crores) and “Titanic” ($2.18 billion) (roughly Rs. 14,456 crores).
“The Force Awakens” opened this weekend in virtually every major market except China, where it will debut on January 9, and Greece and India, where it will roll out next Thursday.
