New Star Wars grosses US$120 million to break first-day record
The seventh movie in the celebrated sci-fi franchise is projected to sell close to $220 million worth of tickets in the United States and Canada through Sunday, beating the record $208.8 million for “Jurassic World” in June, Disney said.

That number blasted the record for the biggest pre-opening in box office history held by “Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2”, which made $43.5 million on its opening night in 2011.
It also had the biggest single-day in sales for any movie, along with the biggest Friday a film has ever had with $120.5 million. “The Force Awakens” brought in a record $238 million-plus over the weekend at the North American box office, so its worldwide or global total is roughly $517 million.
Fans flocked to theaters Thursday evening, many dressed as evil Stormtroopers or lightsaber-wielding Jedi as the movie took in $57 million at domestic theaters. The movie set opening-day records in Australia, Brazil, Britain, France, Finland, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland and other countries.
In third place, the Tina Fey and Amy Poehler comedy “Sisters” earned an estimated $13.42 million in its opening weekend.
The latest Star Wars film may very well be the most anticipated film in the galaxy, and yet, for Disney, the stakes remain high.
Jurassic World had the advantage of opening in China on the same weekend it opened everywhere else, whereas The Force Awakens won’t debut in the world’s second biggest cinema-going territory until 9 January.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens already broke some records in the film industry and received positive reviews and strong recommendations from critics and moviegoers.
The estimated “Force Awakens” gross so far represents more than half the film’s $100 million-plus record in advance domestic ticket sales.
