Massachusetts, Virginia and Minnesota are all good options for educators – at least, that’s according to personal finance site WalletHub’s recently released 2015 list of the best and worst states for teachers.

WalletHub reported its experts hoped to highlight promising teaching opportunities in the “2015’s Best and Worst States for Teachers” list with those struggles in mind. “This information, coupled with being just average in categories such as pupil-to-student ratios makes the state, according to the study, a particularly bad state to teach in”.

“Knowing that we tend to rank lower in education levels, when you compare us nationwide, certainly the fact that teachers aren’t paid as well in our state, that definitely worries me when it comes to recruiting good teachers for the future of education in South Carolina”, Gamble said.

She says lawmakers and the state superintendent Molly Spearman are also working on plans to raise teachers’ salaries at both ends of their careers. Last year, North Carolina was ranked 51st.

But a more specific study from December found the best locations for teachers to be in Ohio, Georgia and Tennessee – none of which appeared in WalletHub’s top 10.

Maness said other things like spending per pupil are also up to state lawmakers, who are looking at improving them. They found that West Virginia ranked as the worst state for teachers. Alaska and the District of Columbia had the worst school systems, whereas Utah and California had the highest student-to-teacher ratio.
