New Trial Set for Officer William Porter in Freddie Gray Case
Last week a jury in Baltimore City could not reach a verdict in the trial of Officer Porter – the first officer to come to trial in connection with the death of Freddie Gray.

Judge Barry Williams set a new date for Officer William Porter to have his case heard after last week’s mistrial, according to Maryland judicial officials.
The new trial is scheduled for June 13. In addition to Porter, there are five more officers to prosecute. Gray died April 19, a week after his neck was broken during a ride in the back of a police van. The jury had deliberated for 16 hours on whether the officer, William Porter, was guilty of involuntary manslaughter in Gray’s death from injuries suffered while in police custody. The sole objective of the hearing is to have the new trial date read in to the record.
The court’s deliberation concerns at which point Porter should have called for medical attention on Gray’s behalf.
Because of the mistrial, Porter’s case is still pending.
And Wood says there are ways the prosecution could compel porter to testify, without violating his constitutional rights. Porter’s first trial ended with a hung jury earlier this month.
“The interesting issue that is on everyone’s mind that is not public is: what if anything will the state do to compel his testimony?” said Jeremy Eldridge, a defense attorney and former prosecutor. For example, Porter said Goodson called him for help checking on Gray, but said they did not discuss Gray’s condition.

Still, prosecutors could explore ways to grant him certain types of immunity that could nonetheless allow them to maintain a criminal case against Porter, Ruther said. “If there’s a credible legal argument, I’m sure they will find it”. “They did the best that they could”, he said.
