New Year’s Eve in New York City Thick With Security

The nerve center, which first opened on the eighth floor in July 2005, serves as an information warehouse with databases that give officers access to billions of records.
Despite a year of global unrest and terror threats leading up to New Year’s Eve, roughly a million people are expected to pack Times Square to watch the ball drop.
Multi-layered checkpoints are also set up in and around Times Square, manned by policemen with long guns, radiation detectors and bomb-sniffing dogs.
Officers from the New York Police Department’s elite emergency services unit surveyed the scene from Times Square rooftops, peering below through binoculars and scopes as snipers stood beside them.
Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said investigators have been monitoring intelligence channels for anything that would suggest Times Square could be a target.
When asked whether he had any hesitation when deciding whether to attend the countdown, Freeman said that it was a spontaneous decision to attend the event, leaving for NY just two hours after making the call at home. More than a million people lined the streets to watch what some described as “the best fireworks in the world”.
“It could happen anywhere, but you can’t start the world panicking”, he said as a recording of the James Brown song “Living in America” blared from the stage.

By early evening, crowds organized into neat pens formed by police barricades stretched for many blocks up Seventh Avenue and Broadway north of One Times Square. He said it was impossible to forget “so many days marked by violence, by death, by the unspeakable suffering of so many innocents”.
