A crowd of more than a million people poured into New York City’s Times Square under heavy security to celebrate the arrival of 2016 with the traditional dropping of the New Year’s Eve crystal ball. They have been empowered to shut down the event at any time and evacuate the area if necessary.

Officers will have radiation detectors, metal detectors and bomb sniffing dogs, a counter terrorism team will guard entry points with long guns, and a thousand security cameras will help keep an eye on it all.

Once inside the square and funneled into one of the dozens of viewing pens monitored by law enforcement, visitors were barred from leaving or re-entering those corrals until the end of the event.
