A large fire has engulfed a skyscraper hotel in Dubai.
The Dubai government’s media office said the blaze had started on the 20th floor, on the outside of the 300-metre tower. Burning debris rained down from The Address building as firetrucks raced to the scene.
However, government sources said that there were only 14 “light” injuries as a result of the fire, and one heart attack.
Ali Al Mutawa, of Dubai’s Civil Defence, told 7Days UAE: “We have controlled 65 per cent of the fire in the hotel and no casualties have been seen so far after evacuating the hotel'”.
Dubai’s police chief said all the hotel’s residents had been evacuated from the scene of the blaze, which had still not been extinguished some two hours after it broke out.
The hotel stands across from the world’s tallest skyscraper, the 800-meter-tall Burj Khalifa, which was to be the initial focal point of a spectacular 25-minute fireworks display, which could be seen across Dubai, to usher in 2016.
A huge fire ripped through a luxury Dubai hotel on Thursday near the world’s tallest tower, where people were gathering to watch the New Year’s Eve celebrations, authorities said.
The media office announced, the fire did not spread indoors due to the internal fire extinguishers.
Dubai Holding also offered alternative accommodation to guests evacuated from the hotel.
Revellers at a luxury Dubai hotel have “shoved and climbed over each other” to escape a huge fire just before New Year’s Eve fireworks were about to go off.
“Currently there are 4 squads of firefighters on site to deal with the fire and ensure the safety of everyone”.
But as midnight struck, with the Address building continuing to burn, onlookers cheered as a swirling mass of multicoloured fireworks enveloped the Burj Khalifa.
One British man had to carry his disabled mother down from the 15th floor of the building when it caught fire.
The hotel is the sixth-tallest building in the city, with 63 floors at 991 feet tall. “Until the fire is put out, we will not have information on what caused it”, he added.

Mr Flynn, who lives in the United Arab Emirates, said he heard no fire alarm in the hotel despite the raging blaze.
