In London, extra armed officers have been called in to police the New Year’s Eve celebrations later.

Fireworks explode past the Times Square Ball (rear) after it dropped to signal the entry of 2016.
The city for the first time was deploying its new Critical Response Command counterterrorism unit, which includes more heavily armed officers, to patrol Times Square.
Those who showed up early in Times Square shrugged off the safety concerns and expressed relief at the temperatures, which are expected to stay well above freezing.
The festivities also included musical acts by Demi Lovato, Nick Jonas and Carrie Underwood.
Ken Talbert, a 46-year-old visiting Times Square from Tennessee with his wife, said there was no way he was going to let the terrorism threats thwart his plans.
Police Commissioner William Bratton told NY1 from the ball drop area, “People coming tonight should feel safe because they will be safe”.
Department officials have said they are unaware of any specific, credible threat to the Times Square gathering.
The unit is trained to detect and respond to planned attacks such those in Paris that killed 130 people on November 13, or the rampage in San Bernardino, California, in which 14 were slain. Rooftop patrols and NYPD helicopters will keep an eye on the crowd, and plainclothes officers will blend in with revelers. All other bags will be searched, and metal detectors will be used to screen everyone in the crowd.

People gather during New Year celebrations in Times Square in the Manhattan borough of NY. “After the Paris incident we were really concerned, but we were sure that the security here would be absolutely top top”, said Ann Alderton, 63, of Durban, South Africa. Yet officials also acknowledged that there were limits to what they could do to ensure security, especially outside the tightly controlled blocks at the heart of the celebration.
